As a London wedding photographer, I’ve shot photographs all across the city, and beyond. Some out in the leafy suburbs, and some in cozy rooms far away from the bright lights of the capital, but I really love it when couples decide to hold their ceremony overlooking some of London’s most breathtaking sights. I was already quite familiar with the Trafalgar Tavern when I was asked to photograph the wedding of Helen and Russell, and knowing the area, I was excited at the opportunities ahead of me.
Greenwich wedding photography is one of my favourite types of work, simply because of the surroundings. The Trafalgar Tavern holds a prime position in this beautiful area of London, with the green and open fields of Greenwich Park to the south, and the meandering Thames to the north. I also think there’s no better choice in Greenwich than the Nelson Banqueting Room. Boasting gigantic bay windows overlooking the river, the photo opportunities are endless.
It’s these bay windows that really are the highlight of the Trafalgar Tavern as a London wedding destination. Not only are they a photographers’ dream, letting vast amounts of natural light into the room, but they also open up to a small verandah overlooking the Thames. On a beautiful day such as the day of Helen and Russell’s wedding, it provided an excellent chance to take some pictures of the couple outdoors in front of the city’s iconic landscape.
The natural light in the Nelson Banqueting Room also opens many doors with regard to the diversity of the wedding album. Natural light is fantastic for taking cool and calm shots that look quite innate, while I also have the option of utilising the flash, providing more dramatic and powerful shots. These vivid and somewhat theatrical shots provide an excellent contrast to the classic design of the Banqueting Room. With a dark wood interior and intricate chandeliers reminiscent of the old time opulence of such venues, the Trafalgar Tavern really is an establishment that oozes tradition.
Of course, the Tavern’s excellent location makes it easy for brides and grooms to venture outside for some photographs on the banks of the Thames, or up by the Royal Observatory. Greenwich offers couples an almost unlimited choice in the types of photographs they want for their album, and for London wedding photographers like myself, it’s a real treat to have such options.
