One of the more pleasant aspects of being a wedding photographer is that from time to time you are booked for a destination wedding. These always tend to be in beautiful locations that allow you to take spectacular pictures of the bride and groom.
While undoubtedly a perk of the job, destination weddings do place additional pressures on a photographer compared to a UK wedding. For example, getting equipment to the location without any mishaps or losses can involve some challenging logistics. However, it’s immensely rewarding to capture a wedding in a perfect destination that the participants can look back on for the rest of their lives.
This year I was called to take the Eurostar to Brussels, the destination for a Nigerian wedding, to photograph a couple called Muti and Deji. Having photographed a few Nigerian weddings in the past and thoroughly enjoying all of them, I was looking forward to this one with a sense of keen anticipation.
I first met Muti and Deji while I was exhibiting at this year’s Luxury Wedding Fair in Mayfair. When the call came a few months later asking if I was available to shoot their wedding, I was delighted to accept.
The couple chose the medieval abbey church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg as their ceremony location and the impressive Hotel Steigenberger for their venue. With 150 guests they needed the hotel’s sizeable Ball Room to accommodate them all. The resulting party went on into the early hours of the morning, which was clearly fun for the guests, but also a pleasure for us to photograph everyone dancing and having a good time.
As with any wedding shoot, the best results are achieved when the whole photography team are all at the top of their game. As ever, my assistant, Barry, provided invaluable help in making the shoot run smoothly and my second photographer, Peter, took some amazing pictures.
Finally a massive thanks to Muti and Deji for allowing us to photograph their big day. It was a privilege to be there and we hope that we’ve left them with a record that they can look back on over many happy years together.
